Before the exam
Taking the boating licence exam
Before the exam you must register, pay the exam fee and sign up for an exam. You sign up in the test calendar or with a test centre.
Bring approved ID. The exam is taken on the test centre's computers or tablets – you cannot use your own.
Your address when you register
Your boating licence is sent by mail to the address you give when you register. Write the full address, with house number and any letter (for example 12B), and check that it is spelt correctly.
Your name must be clearly shown on the letterbox, otherwise the licence may not reach you.
If you cannot have your name on the letterbox, we can send the licence to a c/o address. Send us an email with the address and the name of the person who lives there. That person must have their name clearly shown on the letterbox.
Exam fee
The fee must be paid before you take the exam. You can pay when you register, or later on My page.
Permitted aids
You may use:
- The chart collection (four charts)
- Parallel ruler, ruler, dividers or rolling ruler
- Pen or pencil
- Scrap paper
- Calculator
Some questions require the chart collection, and you may get questions on all four charts.
After the exam
Your result
Your result is shown on the screen when the exam is finished. You will see whether you have passed, and the percentage you got in each of the four topics.
You will not see the result for each individual question.
If you pass
Your boating licence comes in the mail, normally within 2–3 weeks. The photo you have uploaded on My page must be approved first.
Photo for your boating licence
We cannot make your boating licence until your photo has been approved. The photo must meet these requirements:
- Taken in portrait orientation, with your face filling the photo
- Look straight into the camera
- A neutral expression – don't smile or pose
- Your whole face visible, with no shadows
- No sunglasses, caps or other headwear
- If you wear glasses, there must be no reflection from the flash in the lenses
- A light, even background, preferably a white wall with no door frames or the like
- Stand about 1 metre from the wall, so you don't cast a shadow on it
Resit
If you don't pass, you can take the exam again after 14 days. A new attempt costs NOK 495,-.
